In current time, Ukraine is marking the 25th anniversary of nuclear accident at Chernobyl power plant, which is considered the worst accident in the history of nuclear power. On April 26, 1986, the No. 4 reactor at the Chernobyl plant in the border of Ukraine-Belarus exploded ad caught fire for days afterwards. A number of 31 people were killed immediately while estimated 4400 people were caught to death due to radiation-related sicknesses. Tens of thousands residents were forced to flee from a highly contaminated area and never returned. The explosion had sent radiation billowing across Russian Federation, Ukraine and Belarus. 25 years has passed away, but the town closest to the site Prypyat has still been abandoned as a ghost town. On April 26, 2011, Ukraine celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear crisis that resulted in severe consequences. Ukrainian President, Viktor Yanukovych, and his Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev, make a landmark visit to Chernobyl for memorial ceremonies. Early on Tuesday, President Yanukovych also attended a candle-lighting service led by Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill, who struck a bell at 0123 (2223 GMT Monday), the time of the blast, in the Ukrainian capital Kiev. On 26 April 1986, an explosion at the Chernobyl’s No 4 reactor killed immediately 31 people, forced the huge evacuation of thousands of people from their homes in Ukraine, western Russia and Belarus and led to radiation-related sicknesses such as cancer of many others. read more
