On October 4th 2010, scientists from over 80 countries around the world completed their historic census on marine life within 10 years. “Census of Marine Life” is considered to be one of the biggest scientific projects ever. It was started in early 2000 with the aim to do research and discover undersea creatures. More than 2,700 scientists spent 9,000 days under the ocean and made 540 expeditions. A joint US – Philippines research expedition carrying out a study at the island of Luzon in the Philippines has discovered more than 300 species of land animals, plants and deep-sea creatures. Most significantly, the 300 species are proved to be entirely new to science. Scientists from Philippine scientific institutions and California Academy of Sciences spent six-week expedition around reefs, rain forests and ocean floor with aim to discover the previously unknown species and research the biodiversity on Luzon. The academy scientists have stated, “The Philippines is one of the hottest of the hot spots for diverse and threatened life on Earth”.
