There's a place in Florida that's more Cuban than American. In Miami-Dade County, 68 per cent of the 2.4 million residents say their primary language at home is something other than English. Most often, it's Spanish. More than 50 per cent of Miami-Dade's residents are foreign-born. No other U.S. county tops that. Miami-Dade is the nation's eighth most populous county. Immigrants, mostly Cuban but also Haitian, helped make it so. The Cuban immigration began shortly after Fidel Castro seized power in Cuba in 1959, and saw a huge wave of immigrants resulting from the Mariel Boatlift in 1980.
