Recently, security researchers at F-Secure cautioned against a new Ransom Trojan that targets Windows users. The Trojan has been identified as Trojan.Generic.KDV.153863. However, users are not asked to make any payment directly. Instead, the Trojan creators earn money through a technique called short stopping. The Trojan displays an error message, which states that the license of the Windows software used by the targeted user is locked. The message is displayed on a blue screen, to give an impression that the message is coming from Microsoft. The message states that the user's copy of Windows is locked as the user may have suffered fraud or there is an internal system error. Targeted users are asked to activate the product to continue running the installed version. The message warns that data stored on the computer system is locked for security concerns and the user would be able to access the data only after activating the product. Users are also warned that system reinstallation would lead to loss of the stored data. Activation is claimed to be free.
