By: Doc Moseman | 2010-10-01 | Hockey There are two ways to look at the New York Islanders current situation. There is the positive of an 18-point increase from the 2008-09 season to last year, but a third straight Atlantic Division last-place finish also lets you know just how far the Islanders have to go. read more
By: Doc Moseman | 2010-10-05 | Hockey The Montreal Canadiens improbable playoff run last season raises a few questions. How did Montreal manage to win two Game 7s on the road, one against top-seed Washington and another against defending Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh? Where had that Montreal team been all regular season when it struggled just to get into the postseason? And then how did that same Montreal team get blown away by No. 7 seed Philadelphia in five games? read more
By: Doc Moseman | 2010-10-22 | Hockey Most NHL franchises would call a season in which they put up 102 points and won a playoff series a success, but most NHL franchises aren't the Detroit Red Wings. The Wings finished second in the Central Division to Chicago, which was the first time since 1999-2000 that the Wings didn't win the division. read more
By: Doc Moseman | 2010-10-20 | Hockey If the NHL were a color wheel, the Minnesota Wild would be grey. They aren't offensive or brash. They aren't anything really. You just hardly notice that they are around. They are kind of like the Minnesota Timberwolves—it must be something in the water in Minneapolis. read more
By: Doc Moseman | 2010-10-20 | Hockey With apologies to the Phoenix Coyotes, the Colorado Avalanche were the most impressive story in the NHL last year. They were picked by many people—myself included—to finish dead last in the league. They had a dearth of talent, and that which they did have was young and completely unproven. read more
By: Doc Moseman | 2010-10-21 | Hockey Phoenix should have been lousy last year. The Coyotes had talent that looked more like it belonged in the AHL than the NHL, they were mired in ownership chaos and uncertainty, and their coach - the best player in the history of the sport - quit in the preseason. That is a whole lot of excuses they could have used, but they didn't use any. Instead, they started strong, maintained the pace, and made the playoffs. Anyone who says that they saw that coming is lying. read more
By: Doc Moseman | 2010-10-22 | Hockey Over the years the Sharks have been the best in the league at one thing - choking when they had everything in their favor. A ticket to see the perennial losers play remains one of the hottest ticket in any sport. read more
By: Doc Moseman | 2010-10-21 | Hockey More teams in the NHL make the playoffs (16) than miss the playoffs (14). So the fact that the Panthers have missed the playoffs nine consecutive seasons is hard to believe. The fact that they have not won a playoff game since 1997 is even harder to believe. read more
By: Doc Moseman | 2010-10-22 | Hockey Entering last season, the Anaheim Ducks were a popular upstart pick to do some serious damage. However, they finished 11th and were perhaps the biggest disappointment in the league. read more
By: Doc Moseman | 2010-10-20 | Hockey It's a frustrating time to be a Flames fan—and I say that as a life-long Calgarian. Last year, the team came into the season with high hopes, but was horribly mismanaged from the start and went nowhere. read more
By: Doc Moseman | 2010-09-30 | Hockey Their postseason fate came down to a shootout with Philadelphia in the final game of the regular season.
