By: Doc Moseman | 2010-10-05 | Hockey I'm starting my NHL Central Division previews at the bottom, as the Columbus Blue Jackets finished the 2009-10 season with 35 wins and just 79 points, 11 behind fourth-place St. Louis. It was the first time the team had finished in the Central cellar since 2003 and the campaign was considered a huge disappointment after Columbus reached the playoffs the season before. That cost Coach Ken Hitchcock his job last winter, as a result Scott Arniel is the new coach. read more

By: Ed Rigsbee | 2010-03-31 | Self Improvement Since I live in a metaphorical glass house, I'll be the first to admit that I screw up-a lot. And, making a mistake is a far cry from simply being lazy. I'll never forget the comment that my boss, Ray Kahn, made to me sometime in the late 1970s; "If you aren't making mistakes, I don't need you because you are not taking risks. However, if you keep making the same mistakes, I don't need you because you are not learning." These are very powerful words, and they have made a difference to me my entire adult life. read more

By: Doc Moseman | 2010-09-07 | Football The Houston Texans had the best season in franchise history in 2009, finishing with their first winning record at 9-7 after back-to-back seasons at 8-8. Still, most around the team would consider it a disappointment because the playoffs were expected – Houston did have a chance to get in on the final Sunday of the 2009 season with some help but it didn't happen. read more
By: Doc Moseman | 2010-10-05 | Hockey If you can't beat 'em, sign away their top defenseman. That must have been Ottawa's thinking this offseason after watching their second consecutive playoff run end in the first round to Pittsburgh. The Senators signed veteran and former Penguin Sergei Gonchar to a three-year deal. The Senators finished 44-21-6 with 94 points to earn the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference last season. In the playoffs they ran into the Penguins, who swept them in 2008. read more
By: Doc Moseman | 2010-10-20 | Hockey With apologies to the Phoenix Coyotes, the Colorado Avalanche were the most impressive story in the NHL last year. They were picked by many people—myself included—to finish dead last in the league. They had a dearth of talent, and that which they did have was young and completely unproven. read more
By: Doc Moseman | 2010-10-05 | Hockey The Montreal Canadiens improbable playoff run last season raises a few questions. How did Montreal manage to win two Game 7s on the road, one against top-seed Washington and another against defending Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh? Where had that Montreal team been all regular season when it struggled just to get into the postseason? And then how did that same Montreal team get blown away by No. 7 seed Philadelphia in five games? read more
By: Doc Moseman | 2010-10-31 | Basketball The 2010-11 Atlanta Hawks will look a lot like they did last season and that's sort of a good news/bad news situation. Atlanta was able to keep Joe Johnson, but the Hawks had to hand him a ridiculous contract to do so: six years, $124 million. Many experts ridiculed this as the worst contract in the league. Is Johnson a good player? No doubt, as he averaged 21.3 points per game last year and has averaged at least 20 points, four rebounds and four assists in each of his past five seasons. read more
