The Perseids Meteor Shower is observed in August annually when the Earth moves into the orbit of the comet Swift-Tuttle. This comet was discovered in July, 1862 and named after its first observers including Lewis Swift and Horace Parnell Tuttle. Fragments from the comet Swift-Tuttle travel in the Earth’s atmosphere at the extremely high speeds and then burn up in the Earth’s atmosphere, which creates radiant fireballs called meteors. Through clear skies, sky-watchers on earth can easily enjoy this phenomenon. The Geminid meteor shower is an annual rain of meteors occurs in mid-December when our Earth goes through a stream of space rock debris. When these rocks fly through the atmosphere, they burn up and turn into what we call meteors. The 2010 Geminid meteor shower began on December 13, peaked at the early hours of December 14 and lasted until the early hours of December 15. The best time to look for the show is 10 p.m. local time Tuesday 13 December (especially if you’re in the Americas) and sunrise on Wednesday 14 (especially if you’re in Asia) December because that’s when the shower’s radiant point is highest in the sky as seen around the world. Between 80 and 120 shooting stars originating from the constellation Gemini can be seen on across the skies during the peak of the annual celestial show. On Geminid Meteor Shower 2011, NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke predicts that sky watchers can be able to see up to 40 shooting stars per hour on the sky. read more
