By: Mary Rose | 2011-06-22 | News and society The Tupolev Tu-134 Russian airliner crashed in the country's Republic of Karelia has killed at least forty-four people and left eight injured in late Monday evening. The RusAir aircraft was traveling from Moscow to Petrozavodsk when it encountered with the terrible accident. The aircraft carried nine crew-members and 43 passengers on board. Russian authorities are currently searching for the bodies and investigating the crash; however, some early conclusion states that the reason may blame for "unfavorable weather conditions", according to the airport director Alexei Kuzmitsky. read more

According to officials, the worst-hit state is Alabama with the death toll up to 204 people, including 15 killed by a tornado that destroyed the city of Tuscaloosa. Other states including Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia and Virginia are also announced the emergency situation. At least 32 people have been killed in Mississippi, 11 in Georgia, 14 in Tennessee and eight in Virginia on Tuesday and Wednesday. The US National Weather Service said that the current storm will hit North and South Carolina before making its way further north-east. Storms have stroke US for weeks and another major storm system will bring heavy rain in the forthcoming days. read more

The “Occupy Wall Street” protest, which was inspired by Tahrir Square and started on last Saturday, aims to gather 20,000 people to set up beds, kitchens and peaceful barricades in order to occupy Wall Street and surrounding areas in Lower Manhattan for a few months. The target is to end corporate greed and the corrupting influence of money from politics.
