By: Paige Taylor | 2010-07-02 | Destinations Centralia is a borough in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, USA. This is the least populous town in Pennsylvania. In 1960, its population was more than 5000 people, and there is a theater, three school, a post office, seven churches and dozens of restaurants. At that time, Centralia was absolutely a busy town. However, things are different recently. In 2007, there were only 9 people living in the town. Most houses were abandoned and destroyed by nature and human. Now, the only thing that still is still active is St. Mary church which opens on Sundays. The reason that led to such devastated state of the town is a mine fire beneath the city happening in 1962. The town is also known as the ghost town due to its deadly silence and ruins. read more

About its prehistoric times, when a land bridge existed between Okinawa, Yonaguni (probably the time when the underwater ruins were above the waves) and China... about it originally being a separate country called the Ryukyu Kingdom, whose king believed in not fighting because "Life itself is a treasure"... about its invasion in the 1600s by Satsuma (the feudal domain in Japan, not the type of orange!)... about the Japan's constant classification of Okinawans as second-class citizens (a practice which still occurs today). But then I decided that the most influential time for Okinawa occurred in the first half of 1945, and the battle of Okinawa. read more
