The America’s deadliest single tornado in more than 60 years has killed at least 116 people, left 232 people missing, destroyed more than 2,000 buildings and damaged St. John Medical Center - the major hospital in the city. The devastating storm caused a trail damage of six miles long and half a mile wide. Although the local residents had been warned about the tornado about 20 minutes earlier by warning sirens, many of them were not able to shelter in time. After the terrible storm, the authorities said, “It cut the city in half”. Almost 30 per cent of Joplin and home to a population of 50,000 was seriously destroyed. read more

According to local media, parts of the city were seriously damaged. After the natural disaster happened, President Barack Obama on his way to the Republic of Ireland sent his condolences to those affected. "Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to the families of all those who lost their lives in the tornadoes and severe weather that struck Joplin, Missouri, as well as communities across the Midwest today," he said. Jay Nixon, Missouri Governor, declared a state of emergency and warned that more storms would occur. By: Mary Rose | 2011-05-27 | News and society The death toll from the monster tornado that hit through the city of Joplin in Missouri State, U.S. on Sunday, May 22, 2011, has risen to about 125. According to Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon, the number is on its way up. It is the deadliest single tornado in nearly 60 years since 1953 when a tornado struck Flint, Michigan, killing 116 people. The Joplin tornado was rated as an EF-4, the second strongest classification with winds raging from 166 and 200 mph. Authorities estimates that around 25 to 30 percent of Joplin including highly populated areas has been destroyed by the tornado. Rescuers and medical staff are trying their best to save the lives of survivors, bury the unlucky victims as well as clean up the environment. The Missouri State Highway Patrol even sent troopers from other regions to help local officers in southern Missouri face with the destruction.
