Quadball is a competitive, contact, and team sport that is rapidly growing around the globe. It was originally named “Muggle Quidditch” in 2003 and officially renamed “Quadball” in 2022. The Equipment
To play Quadball, you must first have the items and equipment for the game. They are:
- 1 Volleyball (Slightly deflated for better grip)
- 3 Rubber Dodgeballs (Slightly deflated for better grip)
- Hoops (Used in sets of three; they are mounted on poles varying in height from about 90cm to 180cm. Hoops are planted on the ground using either weighted bases or spikes.
- Brooms (Long and straight poles made of either wood, fibreglass, or PVC plastic. They are typically under a meter long and are capped on for safety.)
- Headbands (Worn to easily identify athlete roles {White for chasers, black for beaters, green for keeper, and yellow for seeker}.)
The Basics
Quadball has a set of rules that includes aspects from rugby, basketball, and dodgeball. Players have to ride a ‘broomstick’ and make sure not to drop it. A team consists of 21 athletes with about six to seven players per roster on the field at any given time. Individuals rotate throughout the round, with constant substitutions happening during the game. Teams can have a maximum of 3 athletes of the same gender on the pitch together.
The Positions
Teams have four positions: the chasers, beaters, keepers, and seeker. The Chasers throw a ball through the opposite team’s hoops to score 10 points each on one goal. The Beaters throw three balls to eliminate the opposing teammates and force the opponents to drop any ball they were carrying, dismount their ‘broom’, and run back to their own hoops until their own team scores to rejoin. The Keeper guards the hoops from the opposing scorers. They can also act as a ‘fourth chaser’ when playing offense. And the Seeker must catch a flag, which is the ‘tail’ attached to a neutral referee, also called the flag runner, so they can earn 30 points, either ending the game or continuing to play overtime depending on the conditions.
