Galvanization describes the process of applying a coating of zinc to steel, which is best known for its anti-corrosive properties. However, if you’ve ever had to buy galvanizing paint and tried to apply it to galvanized metal, you’ll know that it’s virtually impossible, and the paint will inevitably peel off over time.

With this in mind, here is a step-by-guide to painting galvanized steel:

What supplies you’ll need

Here is a list of the basic items and supplies you’ll need for painting galvanized steel:

  • Ammonia
  • Sandpaper – heavy duty
  • Metal primer paint
  • Special metal paint
  • Tack cloths

Provided you have the right tools to hand and follow the 4 simple steps below, you should be able to paint galvanized steel successfully:

1. Thoroughly clean the surface of the steel

As with painting any surface, dust and grime anywhere on it can prevent the paint from adhering properly to the material, and depending on the level of debris attached to the surface, may cause lumps and bumps all over the place, resulting in a wholly unprofessional finish.

To avoid this, thoroughly clean the surface in readiness for the application of paint.

2. Wipe the surface down with white vinegar

While you might have heard about the many uses of white vinegar around the home – and likely use a few of them already – you may not be quite so familiar with its use when it comes to painting galvanized steel. Non-toxic, unlike industrial solvents, white vinegar is highly effective when applied with a clean rag to any galvanized surface.

Because the acidity of the vinegar reacts with the metal, the paint will adhere better to the surface when applied.

3. Select your paint

It’s always a good idea to prime the surface that you intend to paint, first, and once you’ve done so, you can go ahead and select your paint. A popular choice are acrylic latex paints, but note that while these do work with steel that has been primed, they are not usually as effective as anti corrosion galvanizing paint, which has been designed specifically for the purpose. This type of paint typically requires a lot less preparatory work, and often adheres to the surface more effectively, too.

4. Go ahead and get painting!

With galvanized steel being such an effective choice of material for so many different construction projects, the fact that you can paint it and make it blend in aesthetically with the environment, is a great bonus and just another reason that makes this material so versatile and robust.

Once you’ve chosen the most appropriate paint type and colour, you can grab your brush and get painting. When the paint has dried completely, there should be no concerns about it peeling at all.

Be sure to follow the simple steps above when painting galvanized steel, and you should be able to complete the task effortlessly. Just remember to choose your paint wisely, and don’t be tempted to skip the cleaning part; if you do, you’ll likely regret it almost instantly! For more detailed guidance on selecting the right paint for your galvanized steel, browse online or chat to a paint supplier or manufacturer for the most up-to-date advice.
