Mashed potatoes, originating in the United Kingdom, are a very popular and versatile dish that is creamy, buttery, and smooth. They are the ideal side dish (besides some stuffing) to nearly every other meal and are also the best part of any Thanksgiving holiday! Mashed potatoes go very well with other similar side dishes and condiments such as gravy and sauces, as well as several main meals like Swiss steak, Salisbury steak, or beef tips, but can also be equally enjoyed by itself. Ingredients:
- 2-inch chunks of 2 peeled and sliced pounds of King Edward, Golden Wonder, Red Rascal, Russet, Idaho, or Yukon Gold potatoes
- 1 Cup of milk or cream
- 2 Tablespoons of solid butter
- 3 cloves of peeled garlic (Optional)
- Salt and black pepper
Directions:
- Gather all the ingredients together.
- Bring a big pot of salted water to a boil. Put the garlic and potatoes inside the pot, lower the temperature to moderate, and simmer the potatoes for about 15 minutes or until they are easily pierced with a fork.
- Set the temperature to low and heat up the milk/cream and butter in a small saucepan until the butter is melted.
- When done, drain the garlic and potatoes and return them to the hot pot for about 1 to 2 minutes to drain any excess moisture in the dish.
- Pour the warm milk/cream mixture progressively while mashing the potatoes until they are all creamy and smooth.
- Season it with salt and pepper, top it with extra solid butter, and present the meal alongside other dishes and condiments or just by itself.
- Serve and enjoy with either your friends, your family, or by yourself!
