If you’ve grown up loving animation and the different styles and tones the genre can portray, then Netflix is definitely the streaming service for you.

Animated adult shows are a common genre, but Netflix has taken it up a notch by introducing shows that have gone on to win awards and have touched on themes that animated shows have never been able to conquer before.

The great thing about animation is that the storyline is limitless, so creators can go wild with the plot. This can often result in some hilarious adaptions but also brings a new perspective on real-life problems.

Bojack Horseman

Bojack Horseman is a Netflix original and is known to be one of those animated shows that brings light to serious topics. Bojack is a horse-man hybrid that lives in a world where humans and animal-human hybrid characters live together. The show navigates the life of Bojack, a washed-up celebrity who once starred in a 90s sitcom and lives out his middle-aged years in existentialism. He abuses substances and has a terrible attitude towards life, but you get to see his complicated yet wholesome relationships with characters from his past and present.

Despite Bojack being a horse, this has to be one of the human shows to ever exist. It touches on some difficult topics like mental illness and substance abuse – and when the series came to an end in 2020, the final episodes were incredibly deep and emotional. This is the perfect show to binge and will have you crying with laughter and then sadness in one 20-minute episode.

Archer

Archer has been one of Netflix’s most iconic shows for a long time. The animation style looks like your favourite comic book has come to life and the premise is hilariously entertaining. It follows the story of a handsome spy voiced by H. John Benjamin, as he causes havoc at a spy agency named “Isis”, which was formed by his mother. The show is mostly comical with lots of action, but every now and then you see some humanity from the characters. This must be one of the best binge-worthy shows, as it has over 12 seasons and counting.

Rick and Morty

Rick and Morty has become a cult classic and like the best online casino sign up bonus it always offers a rewarding experience. Rick is a mad scientist with a regular family, who corrupts his grandson, Morty, and involves him in escapades around the universe. With his extreme intellect, Rick has created portals to other dimensions and galaxies and often has some conflict with aliens.

The world of Rick and Morty was created by the boundary-pushing writers at Adult Swim, and the show isn’t for everyone. If you like dark humour and science-fiction and you can stomach some pretty controversial themes and lots of violence, then give Rick and Morty a try. Once you get past the gore, the show is actually very funny, and the writers go to extra lengths with a brilliant script. This show is extremely easy to binge, and once you’re finished, you’ll be stuck in the same boat as the rest of the Rick and Morty fans waiting years for the next season.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

If anime is your thing, then Netflix is the place to be. The genre was once quite difficult to stream but Netflix saw a gap in the market and provided. Neon Genesis Evangelion is an anime cult classic from the 90s and is a good option to start with, as it’s not as violent as most anime but still packs a punch for excitement. Netflix is the place to be for exciting, comedic, and controversial animated shows and they all have the binge-worthy stamp of approval.
